Alamogordo’s Legendary Atari Game Burial: Unearthing a Unique Piece of Gaming History

by Casa Honda Alamogordo, New Mexico, is home to more than just stunning landscapes and friendly communities. It holds a quirky piece of history, one that intersects with the world of gaming and urban legends. While Roswell might be synonymous with extraterrestrial folklore, Alamogordo has its own unique tale involving E.T., but not the kind you might expect. We’re talking about the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial video game, not an actual alien encounter! more The Mystery of the Buried Cartridges Back in the 1980s, the video game industry faced a significant downturn, often referred to as the video game crash. Among the games caught in this downturn was E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, developed for the Atari 2600. This game, rushed to market to coincide with the popularity of the Steven Spielberg film, was met with poor reception and overwhelming returns. As the story goes, unsold cartridges of this game and other Atari materials were buried in a landfill in Alamogordo. For years, this tale was regarded as an urban legend, a symbol of the gaming industry’s rapid rise and fall. It wasn’t until 2014 that an excavation team set out to uncover the truth, turning this legend into a fascinating chapter of real history right here in Alamogordo. Uncovering the Truth In a twist that sounds like it could have come from a movie, the excavation did uncover E.T. cartridges, along with other Atari games and materials. This find not only confirmed the long-standing myth but also brought Alamogordo into the spotlight as a unique landmark in gaming history. It’s intriguing to think that while exploring the roads of Alamogordo in your new Honda from Casa Honda, you’re traveling near a site that holds a piece of global pop culture history. Favorite Alamogordo Coffee Shops

by Casa Honda Getting started in the morning can be tough, and there’s nothing that enhances the morning better than a little caffeinated recharge. We love our morning cup of coffee at Casa Honda too, and we decided to share our favorite local coffee destinations. If you need to get to your favorite coffee shop visit us here at Casa Honda for a great new Honda or reliable used car. Get on the road and check out these local coffee shops. more Mad Coffee on 10th Mad Coffee on 10th serves up great coffee in a unique atmosphere. The decorations are almost as good as the coffee, and the coffee keeps us coming back. There is pretty much everything a coffee lover will need, along with a sweet selection of alternatives like smoothies and juices. We like the 24 oz iced coffee because there’s a lot and there’s no waiting to cool down. You can get frappes of most flavors, and there’s a nice selection of syrups to boost your favorite blend. You can even pick up a nice bowl for breakfast or a tasty sandwich with lunch. Plateau Espresso Plateau Espresso is a great stop on the way to work for that caffeinated treat you’re craving without leaving your Honda. The drive-through is just foam on the latte, and the latte is very good. The menu of signature drinks is truly impressive. Everyone has a favorite, and the best part is working your way through the menu to try them all. We recommend the namesake Plateau, which had vanilla and drizzled caramel, and the New Mexico Paradise, a caramel, chocolate, and hazelnut combination. There’s a wonderful selection of panini’s if you skipped breakfast or you can just grab a bagel and go. Waffle & Pancake Shoppe Sometimes you need a hearty breakfast with your coffee, and the Waffle & Pancake Shoppe delivers the goods. The coffee is good, and there’s a lot more to pair it with, including big helpings of the same waffles and pancakes that are right there in the name. You can get them with sausages, bacon, or eggs. If you’re having trouble deciding there is always George’s 24th Century Big Breakfast Sampler, a meal as large as its name, which includes eggs, toast, hash browns, bacon, sausage patties, and links, and a half slice of ham. This is one of our favorite places to fill up before work. What are your favorite breakfast destinations around town? Let us know on Facebook! If you need to swing by and pick up your favorite morning meal, see us at Casa Honda and get there in style with a new or certified pre-owned Honda. That lead to the purchase of El Paso Ford in 1969, which was renamed Casa Ford and is still going strong today. Casa grew with the addition of what would become Casa Nissan about ten years later. During Wally Lowenfield’s time at the helm, he served on the National Dealer Council for Ford Motor Company, and eventually became Chairman. Today, his descendants keep up the traditions Wally started, growing the Casa Auto Group in El Paso to four dealerships which include Casa Kia and Casa Buick GMC, along with the original Casa Ford and Casa Nissan. These dealerships have been repeatedly recognized by their OEMs for their excellence in serving the El Paso community. The Casa Auto Group is active in El Paso with a number of community organizations, and we plan to continue this tradition in Alamogordo. Casa Honda is Ready to Serve Alamogordo!
